Inuyasha is one of the few animes that has an undecided ending. Well as far as the fans know, that is.
There are several types of endings such as:
[1]-Some series have very predictable endings, such as Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres, which make us fanfiction writers not feel very creative since we are able to tell what the plot will be right away.
[2]-Or, some series---the ones that the fanfiction writers thrive on because everyone wants it changed---are the ones that have the horrible endings, the one where the main characters don't end up together or it just ended way too fast, such as Escaflowne, Gravitation and Magic Knight Rayearth.
[3]-Finally, there is the last kind of ending--the ending that just makes the series all worthwhile, but makes you want to cry for more--the tragic or happy ending, such as Sailor Moon or Cowboy Bebop. These endings draw everything to a close but still leave much room for creativity.
However, Inuyasha has yet, of course, to be catagorized.
But until that time, I have thought of a few possible endings to the series. Remember, these are just some thoughts, none of these are probabally going to be this way:
Tragic Ending
1.) Kagome will give the rest of her soul to Kikyo, and die, so that Kikyo and Inuyasha can be together. Or Kagome will somehow sacrifice herself to save everyone during a battle.
Though it is highly unlikely for Kagome to be killed off, it is still quite possible. Think about it, everyone's name in anime means something: something about their personality, their lives or their attacks. Kagome's name happens to mean 'Sacrifice'. Is it a sign? I hope not, but we cannot rule out the possibility. After all, nobody even knew that Spike in Cowboy Bebop would die either. x_x
Unsettling Ending
2.) The Shikon Jewel will be put back together and Naraku will be defeated. Kagome will then return to her own time after confessing her feelings for InuYasha. InuYasha, Kagome having given him the jewel, will wish to become human to purify the jewel. Kikyo's soul is now at peace and she has gone, giving up on Inuyasha. In the future, Kagome tries to pick up where she left off, resuming her old life and trying to forget the hanyou. Several years later, she bumps into his reincarnation at her doorstep.
Not as tragic as the first ending, but still doesn't make me completely happy, since I, myself, prefer that Kagome stay in the past, with the well still open.
Half-Happy Ending
3.) Naraku is defeated and Kagome and InuYasha confess their love to each other. Kikyo is put to rest once again and Kagome stays in past to live with the dog-boy. In the future, many years later, Souta owns the shrine and he goes out to the Goshinboku Tree. He's very old, (like a grandpa) and he kneels in front of the Goshinboku where there are several graves that had not been there in his earlier days as a young man. He eyes them and prays silently. He stands up and goes to head back in whispering, "I love you, Nee-chan, Inu-no-nichan."
Teary-eyed? I bet. But its a half-happy ending nevertheless. Why only half-happy? Well...even though they end up together, it's pointed out that our favorite couple eventually do die. Nobody likes that to know that; everyone wants to picture them living forever...after all, Inuyasha IS a demon. [Nee-chan is what Souta calls Kagome and Inu-no-nichan is what he calls Inuyasha. It really means: dog-eared brother.]
